Why do small acts of kindness matter?
In this chaotic and fast-paced world it’s easy to become disheartened by the constant barrage of negative news and the seemingly never-ending struggles of humanity. The current ongoing and destructive wars, brutally killing innocent people bears heavily on the psyche of most people. At times, it’s unbearable to watch the news reports on these atrocities.
Many of us are in despair about the state of our world. However, in this chaos, I firmly believe that little acts of kindness can restore our faith in humanity and make a significant difference in someone’s life. Growing up in the humble neighbourhood of Steenberg, Cape Town, at the time, oppressed under the apartheid laws of South Africa, I was exposed to the harsh realities of life in an abnormal society.
The dusty streets, overcrowded areas served as a constant reminder that many people within our community were facing immense hardships. It was not the ideal start in life, but what it did was build a caring community. It was in this environment, through the example of my parents and others, that I learned the value of empathy, compassion, and lending a helping hand.
As I ventured out into the world, I soon realised that the hardships I experienced were not limited to just one community or country. Poverty, inequality, and suffering exist on a global scale. It became increasingly important for me to be conscious of the struggles people face and to take action whenever possible.
THOUGHT OF THE WEEK:
Whether it’s a homeless person, a friend going through a difficult time, or even a stranger in need, I’ve learned, through example, to help wherever I can. It may be as simple as buying a meal or offering a listening ear to someone who needs to share their burdens. These small acts of kindness may seem insignificant in the grand scheme of things, but they can have a profound impact on someone’s life and also have a transforming effect on the giver.
QUOTE OF THE DAY:
