The Need to Belong
Belonging—it’s a word that resonates with a profound sense of familiarity, evoking memories of warmth, camaraderie, and acceptance. Yet, its significance extends far beyond mere sentimentality. Belonging is the lifeblood of our collective consciousness, the heartbeat that pulses through the veins of humanity, reminding us of our interconnectedness and shared destiny. ( c: Forbes )
Belonging is a fundamental part of being human: We need people and this need is hardwired into our brains.
This week’s topic holds special significance as I’m having so much fun developing my blogs on the topics that interest me. Like, belonging.
I’m deeply thankful for my job, and my first day back in the office was fantastic. I felt a strong sense of belonging.
But, what’s the big deal with belongingness?
Deep down, belonging is an essential thing we yearn for. It’s not just about fitting in; we long to be fully embraced for who we truly are. This is a topic that really leads me to search for answers, and I love asking people what it means to them.
It’s one of my post dinner subjects particularly when I’m in ethnic company. It must be something about the way I grew up and then subsequently moving to settle in Australia. Whether it’s reflecting on my own upbringing or recounting my experiences of moving, Despite having spent more of my life here than in my birth place, I am constantly searching for that feeling of identity and connection. I long for a community or someone who truly gets me, who can see me for who I am, listen and appreciate my worth.
That feeling of belonging that gives a sense of connection that goes beyond merely being acquaintances, but those special bonds that fill our souls with warmth and acceptance.
We cannot separate the importance of a sense of belonging from our physical and mental health. The social ties that accompany a sense of belonging are a protective factor helping managing stress and other behavioral issues.
THOUGHT OF THE WEEK :
When we feel we have support and are not alone, we are more resilient, often coping more effectively with difficult times in our lives. Coping well with hardships decreases the physical and mental effects of challenging situations.
